Luxor Day Trip from Cairo: Temples, Valley of the Kings & Ancient Egypt
Luxor, home to the world's greatest concentration of ancient Egyptian monuments, is just 55 minutes by EgyptAir from Cairo (often under $80 return) — making a long day trip entirely feasible if you're organised. The city of Luxor is essentially built on top of ancient Thebes, and what remains is staggering: the Karnak Temple complex (the world's largest ancient religious site), Luxor Temple on the East Bank, and across the Nile on the West Bank — the Valley of the Kings (where Tutankhamun's tomb was found), Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahari, and the Colossi of Memnon. A single day is enough for the Valley of the Kings (3–4 tombs) plus either Karnak or Luxor Temple. Hire a private guide from Luxor airport — it makes the experience dramatically richer and more efficient. Fly out on an early morning EgyptAir flight and return on an evening departure. Staying overnight is even better: sunrise at Karnak and sunset at Luxor Temple on the Nile are among Egypt's most beautiful experiences.
