Khan el-Khalili Cairo: The Ancient Bazaar Complete Visitor Guide

Khan el-Khalili is one of the oldest and largest souks in the Arab world — a bazaar established in 1382 that has operated continuously for over 600 years, threading through the heart of Islamic Cairo in a dense network of covered alleyways, caravanserais, and market streets that sell gold and silver jewellery, spices, perfumes, textiles, papyrus, lanterns, shisha pipes, and every conceivable category of Egyptian souvenir. It's both a functioning commercial district serving Cairo's residents and an incomparable sensory experience for anyone who walks into it.

The main entrance on Al-Muizz Street and the surrounding streets are the tourist-facing section: silver and gold vendors, papyrus galleries, alabaster workshops, and the souvenir shops that line the main pedestrian alleyways. These are not the cheapest places to buy anything, and prices are negotiated rather than fixed everywhere. Walking ten minutes off the main drag into the residential streets that blend into the souk reveals the working city: fabric merchants, spice wholesalers, copper smiths, and the neighbourhood mosques and madrasas that Khan el-Khalili has always been built around.

Fishawi's Café — al-Qahwa el-Fishawi — has been serving tea, coffee, and shisha continuously since 1773 (it claims to have never closed). Sitting in its mirrored, chandelier-lit interior with a glass of karkade (hibiscus tea) and watching the souk traffic is the best version of idleness available in Cairo. The surrounding streets have other traditional ahwa (coffee houses) equally atmospheric.

The Al-Azhar Mosque (650 years old) and the Al-Hussein Mosque are embedded in the bazaar district; the area is best explored on foot with half a day minimum. Avoid Friday mornings when the area around the mosques is busiest with prayer attendance.
