Best Day Trips from Cairo

Cairo's position in northern Egypt makes it the ideal base for exploring some of the ancient world's most spectacular sites. The Pyramids of Giza, just 30 minutes from the city centre, are the obvious first stop, but the day trip possibilities extend to the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, the Coptic village of Dahshur, the resort city of Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast, and the ancient quarry town of Aswan accessible by overnight train. No visit to Cairo is complete without at least one excursion beyond the city limits.
