Pyramids of Giza Cairo: Essential Visitor Guide
The Pyramids of Giza are one of the genuine wonders of the ancient world — three enormous limestone structures rising from the desert plateau on the western bank of the Nile, constructed over 4,500 years ago with a precision and ambition that still astonishes modern engineers and architects. Seeing them for the first time is a profound and humbling experience that no photograph or film can adequately prepare you for.
The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the oldest and largest, originally standing 146 metres and constructed from an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks. The interior burial chambers can be entered for an additional fee — a narrow and somewhat claustrophobic but utterly unique experience that connects visitors directly to the 26th century BC. The Pyramid of Khafre, slightly smaller but appearing taller due to its higher location, retains some of its original limestone casing near the apex.
The Great Sphinx crouches before Khafre's pyramid — a 73-metre limestone statue with a human head and lion's body that is among the oldest monumental sculptures in Egypt. Arrive at the Giza Plateau as soon as it opens at 8am to experience the site in the early light and before the crowds intensify. The Sound and Light Show in the evening illuminates the pyramids and sphinx with coloured light while a narrated history plays — a memorable way to end a day at one of history's greatest sites.
