Cairo Nile Cruises: Felucca Sailing & Riverside Life
The Nile is Cairo's lifeblood — and watching the city from the water, on a traditional felucca sailboat as the sun drops behind the minarets, is one of Egypt's most peaceful experiences. The Nile between Cairo and Luxor has been sailed continuously for 5,000 years; a felucca trip is one of the most ancient forms of transport still operating.
Felucca Sailing in Cairo
Feluccas — traditional wooden Nile sailboats with a single triangular sail — can be hired from the corniche opposite the Ramses Hilton and near Dokki. Typical rate: EGP 200-400/hour for the whole boat (fits 8-10 people). Haggle firmly — first quoted prices are for tourists. The best time: an hour before sunset, watching the sky turn amber over the Giza plateau.
Nile Dinner Cruises
For a more structured experience, dinner cruise boats depart from the Corniche el-Nil between 8-10pm. Typically include a buffet, belly dancing and live music. Nile Maxim and Pharaoh's cruise boats are well-regarded. Prices from EGP 1,200 per person.
Zamalek Island
Cairo's most pleasant neighbourhood sits on a Nile island — leafy streets, Cairo Opera House, the Cairo Tower observation deck, and the finest collection of expatriate-friendly restaurants and bars in the city.
