Khan el-Khalili Cairo: Historic Bazaar Shopping Guide

Khan el-Khalili is Cairo's oldest and most labyrinthine bazaar, a medieval marketplace that has been at the commercial heart of Islamic Cairo since the 14th century. The warren of covered streets and alleyways stretches across several city blocks, and getting genuinely lost within it is part of the essential experience — one that connects visitors to the same trading rhythms that have animated this quarter for seven centuries.

The bazaar is primarily divided by trade — gold and silver jewellery on the main street, spices and perfume oils in the spice souk, copper and brass metalwork in the artisan quarter, and textiles in the fabric lanes. Papyrus paintings and alabaster figurines aimed at tourists line the main approaches, but venture deeper into the lanes and you find the workshops where traditional craftspeople still practice their trades amid the tourist commerce.

El Fishawy Cafe, tucked into an alley within the heart of the bazaar, claims to have been open continuously since 1773 and is one of Cairo's most famous institutions for shisha and mint tea. Bargaining is expected and essential throughout the bazaar — the asking price is rarely less than double the fair price, so begin negotiations at 30-40% of the first figure offered and work toward a mutually acceptable middle ground with patience and good humour. The adjacent Al-Azhar Mosque and the historic architecture of Islamic Cairo make Khan el-Khalili the natural centre of any old Cairo exploration.
