Coptic Cairo: Ancient Churches & Christian Heritage Guide
Coptic Cairo is one of the oldest Christian communities in the world, a compact historic district in the southern part of Old Cairo where Egyptian Christians have worshipped continuously for nearly 2,000 years. This extraordinary enclave of churches, monasteries, and a synagogue within ancient Roman fortifications represents a depth of Christian history that predates almost every church in Europe and draws pilgrims and curious visitors from around the world.
The Hanging Church — so called because it was built above a Roman gatehouse — is the most famous and beautiful of Coptic Cairo's many churches, dating from the 3rd century with a distinctive wooden roof shaped like an inverted ark. The interior's ivory-inlaid screens, medieval icons, and ancient inscriptions create an atmosphere of extraordinary antiquity that time seems unable to diminish. The Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus is traditionally believed to mark the site where the Holy Family rested during their flight to Egypt.
The Coptic Museum adjacent to the Hanging Church houses the world's finest collection of Coptic art — textiles, manuscripts, icons, and architectural fragments spanning the 3rd to 13th centuries. The Ben Ezra Synagogue within the same compound is where the famous Cairo Geniza was discovered in 1896 — a treasure trove of 300,000 medieval Jewish manuscript fragments that transformed scholarly understanding of medieval Mediterranean history. The entire district can be explored in half a day and makes an ideal pairing with the Egyptian Museum for a full day of immersive ancient history.
