On a steamy Thursday evening, dozens of Cairo residents unroll yoga mats and lace up trainers at Al-Azhar Park’s community centre, gearing up for a free hour-long group aerobics class under the shade of jacaranda trees. This scene, once a rarity, is now part of a growing trend in the capital: council-run group exercise classes attracting neighbourhoods back into shared wellness routines, often at a fraction of the price found in private gyms.

The recent swell in community-led fitness comes as more Cairenes look for affordable, accessible ways to stay active in an era of rising living costs and growing awareness around physical and mental health. Last month, the Ministry of Youth and Sports reported a 22% uptick in sign-ups for municipal exercise programs across Greater Cairo since Ramadan. Many participants cite the sense of safety, social connection, and accountability that comes with working out together on familiar turf.

Where to Join: Top Council-Run Facilities

Zamalek’s Gezira Youth Centre, tethered just off Saray El Gezira Street, is one hub at the heart of this movement. The centre’s schedule runs seven days a week during the summer, with sunrise Tai Chi (Sundays and Wednesdays at 6 a.m.), evening group circuit workouts (Monday to Friday, 7 p.m.), and Saturday family fitness sessions led by certified trainers from the Egyptian Youth Federation. A single drop-in group class ranges from 25 to 40 Egyptian pounds, with monthly passes for unlimited sessions costing 300 pounds—well below the 900-1,200 pounds standard at private studios in Mohandessin or New Cairo.

South in Maadi, the Degla Community Sports Club, operated in partnership with the Cairo Governorate, offers weekly group cycling classes on the leafy Corniche and outdoor pilates at the community amphitheatre, open to residents of all ages. The club’s Ramadan Step Challenge drew over 700 sign-ups and is credited with encouraging several participants to establish their own neighbourhood walking groups around Road 9 and Sarayat Al Maadi.

The Demand Behind the Surge

Council data confirms a marked rise in local engagement. According to a June 2026 survey by the Cairo Municipal Wellness Initiative, 39% of adult participants in council-hosted outdoor exercise classes had never previously belonged to any fitness group. Most cited affordability and convenience as deciding factors. The report also noted that weekend football leagues and women-only fitness hours at venues such as the Greater Cairo Sports Complex are at 95% capacity each session between May and August.

For families and older adults, group classes in public spaces fill a vital gap. “Municipal venues put health in reach for people who might not otherwise join a gym or club,” said a programme coordinator at the El Horreya Garden Community Centre, one of the oldest council facilities in Downtown Cairo. The centre’s monthly pass runs 200 pounds for unlimited morning classes, including gentle stretching and low-impact aerobics.

How to Get Started

Residents can sign up in person at most council facilities with a copy of their national ID and proof of local address. All programs are open to adults and teens; some have child-friendly sessions or senior hours. Schedules and session types (from Zumba to strength circuits) are listed on each centre’s physical noticeboard and social media pages. Cars are not allowed inside training areas, and lockers are first come, first served.

While council-run group exercise isn’t a substitute for medical advice or individual fitness planning, it’s a path to a healthier community—one Zamalek squat or Maadi stretch at a time.
