Egypt Launches Digital Platform, Trains Youth Against Rising Cyber Threats

Egypt has made a significant push to improve cybersecurity for its 98 million internet users, launching a national awareness platform in March 2026 under the banner 'Digital Citizenship and Online Protection.' The initiative, known as Wa3i.net, aims to strengthen digital literacy and security across the country, a response to the growing complexity of online threats faced by individuals and businesses alike.

Building a Cyber-Aware Generation

The National Telecommunication Institute (NTI) has taken a leading role in this effort by launching the second edition of its free Cybersecurity Academy for Juniors and Youth. This program is designed to train 5,000 participants across Greater Cairo and nine other governorates, targeting school students, university students, and recent graduates. By focusing on the next generation, Egypt hopes to create a resilient base of citizens who understand the fundamentals of online safety, from recognizing phishing attempts to protecting personal data.

In a more immediate, community-driven approach, over 30 Cairo families recently took part in a 'Family Cyberday' event. Organized by cybersecurity firm Kaspersky and the Information Technology Institute, the event covered practical topics like online safety, phishing recognition, and data protection. Such workshops highlight the growing recognition that cybersecurity is not just a technical issue but a household concern, where parents and children must learn together to avoid common pitfalls.

The Threat Landscape: Real and Growing

The need for these initiatives is underscored by the latest threat data. According to Kaspersky, 27.4% of Egyptian internet users faced online threats in 2024. The company also reported that phishing and social engineering attacks rose by 44% in the Middle East, Turkey, and Africa region, demonstrating that the risks are becoming more sophisticated. Egypt is not starting from scratch in its defense. The country ranked 23rd globally on the 2020 Cybersecurity Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) with a score of 95.45, reflecting established measures that include a Supreme Council for Cybersecurity and a national cybersecurity strategy. Still, the rapid evolution of cyber threats means that public awareness must keep pace.

The combination of government programs like Wa3i.net, NTI's academy, and industry partnerships with firms like Kaspersky represents a multi-layered response. For Cairo's residents, the message is clear: cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and the tools to learn are increasingly accessible through free training, community events, and formal education pathways. As cyber risks evolve, the city's ongoing investment in digital defense will be critical for safeguarding its growing online population.
