Cairo Launches Hydrogen and Waste Conversion Projects for Green Tech

Green Tech Egypt is developing Egypt’s first Waste-to-Energy plant while partnering with the Ministry of Military Production on a 15GW green hydrogen plant. These efforts form part of a broader set of projects that aim to turn Cairo waste streams into usable outputs such as hydrogen and fertilizer.

The timing aligns with ongoing pressure on energy supply and landfill capacity in Greater Cairo. Projects already in motion convert daily waste volumes into materials that could feed local industry and reduce reliance on imported fuels. The focus on circular processes draws directly from existing operations at wastewater and landfill sites.

Named sites and community efforts

Zero Carbon Green Planet, an Emirati-Egyptian joint venture, processes 400 tonnes of organic waste per day at Cairo’s May 15 landfill into graphene, hydrogen, and fertilizer. The first phase reached operational status by 2025. In the Giza area, Dr. Weee opened its physical showroom for refurbished devices in September 2025, emphasizing e-waste handling and circular economy practices. Hanna Fathy’s rooftop system in the Manshiyet Nasser neighborhood produces biogas and hot water, showing how Zabaleen community members apply small-scale green technology.

Supporting infrastructure data

The Gabel El-Asfar wastewater treatment plant in Greater Cairo treats 2.5 million cubic meters of wastewater daily, with over 60 percent of its electricity supplied by biogas generated from sludge. These figures illustrate the scale already achieved at one major facility and provide a baseline for further expansion of similar recovery methods. Green Tech Egypt’s hydrogen and waste-to-energy plans build on this model by applying European technology standards to larger volumes of waste and energy demand.

Progress on the listed projects will determine when graphene, hydrogen, and fertilizer outputs become more widely available in Cairo markets.
