Cairo Launches Cybersecurity Academy to Protect Millions of Egyptian Users

With nearly 98 million internet users-representing 72.2% of the total population-Egypt has taken significant steps to fortify its digital borders. The launch of the Wa3i.net cyber awareness platform in March 2026 marks a central pillar of the national Digital Citizenship and Online Protection initiative. This platform aims to provide a comprehensive framework for security awareness, responding to a landscape where online threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

The push for stronger digital resilience follows data from 2024 showing that 27.4% of Egyptian internet users faced online threats. Across the broader Middle East, Turkey, and Africa region, phishing and social engineering attacks have risen by 44%, highlighting the urgent need for the specialized training programs currently rolling out across the capital.

Building Resilience from the Classroom Up

Educational outreach has become the primary tool for mitigating these risks. The National Telecommunication Institute (NTI) is currently training 5,000 participants in the second edition of its Cybersecurity Academy for Juniors and Youth. This expansive program covers essential safe internet practices for school students, while also providing advanced technical training for university students and recent graduates across Greater Cairo and nine other governorates.

Community engagement is also driving change at the neighborhood level. In Cairo, a recent Family Cyberday event hosted in collaboration with the Information Technology Institute (ITI) at Knowledge City brought together over 30 families. Participants were trained in core defensive strategies, including how to identify phishing scams, secure social media accounts, and safely navigate away from malicious websites. These efforts are part of a broader expansion of the Kids Cyber Resilience Project.

For younger digital natives, the Cybersecurity Superhero Academy, located in Cairo's Smart Village, offers a specialized track. The program provides free training to 400 participants aged 12-17, covering critical safety topics such as cyber-harassment, QR code security, and general social media safety. To ensure accessibility, the academy provides free transportation for students traveling from across Cairo and Giza.
