Cairo Hosts African University Games in September, Drawing Hundreds of Thousands
A surge in student-led events and selection tournaments across Egyptian universities has built the foundation for the capital's upcoming continental event.
How we reported this
Cairo will stage the African University Championship in September 2026 after Egyptian universities recorded record internal participation during the 2025/2026 fiscal year.
The timing aligns with expanded campus programs that first identify talent at the student level before feeding into national teams. These local competitions have grown in scale because political support has allowed universities to run repeated trials and festivals without previous limits on numbers or variety.
Campus events feeding the Cairo pipeline
American University in Cairo captured gold in women's basketball at the 10th World University Championship in Spain, showing how one Cairo campus already converts internal selection into international results. Similar internal trials at other institutions supplied the broader Egyptian squads that also collected medals in volleyball and swimming at the same meet.
More than 300,000 students took part in university-level trials to form teams, while 75 to 80 universities sent squads to the 52nd and 53rd University and Higher Institutes Sports Tournaments. The 100 Days of Sports initiative, launched under the presidential human-development program, added 512 separate events that reached over 103,000 students across 41 universities, including multiple festivals held on Cairo-area campuses.
Next steps for organisers and students
The Egyptian Universities Sports Federation has opened volunteer registration so current students can help run both the revived sector league and the Cairo games. Registration for the ambassadors program is also active, giving undergraduates a direct route to promote events ahead of the September championship. Students interested in competing or volunteering can contact their own university sports offices to join the remaining selection rounds.
