Campus-level drive fuels wider gains
The surge traces directly to expanded internal university activities that let students try out for teams before moving into centralized events. More than 300,000 students took part in those campus sessions during the 2025/2026 fiscal year, according to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Organizers then ran 21 centralized championships to prepare squads for the African Games, while the separate “100 Days of Sports” initiative reached 103,000 students through 512 events staged at 41 universities.
These local tournaments and festivals supplied the talent pipeline that produced Egypt’s medals at world-level student events earlier this year. Two gold medals in women’s volleyball and basketball, plus swimming medals, came from the 10th World University Championship in Spain, while the taekwondo team earned silver at the Summer World University Games in Germany. The same base of campus activity also helped secure hosting rights for the 2026 FISU World University Finswimming Championship in Sharm El-Sheikh.
Next steps for Cairo organizers
Preparations in the capital now focus on the 18-discipline program approved for the African University Games and on the visual identity and mascot already launched for the event. The Egyptian Universities Sports Federation has opened volunteer registration for Cairo students and revived the long-suspended Sector League through new cooperation agreements with universities. Officials say the immediate priority is completing logistics so that the September games can run smoothly while keeping the same emphasis on broad student involvement that marked this year’s domestic calendar.
