Student Athletes Drive Egypt's University Sports Surge Across Nation
Student numbers and campus programs across dozens of institutions show how participation has built recent national results.

Egypt will host the African University Championship in Cairo in September 2026 after a year of growth in university sports activities during the 2025/2026 fiscal year.
The increase in campus-level activity helps explain why Egyptian teams secured hosting rights and medals at multiple international events. University programs have drawn students into regular training and competition, creating a wider base of athletes who later represent the country abroad.
Campus Participation Across Institutions
Over 300,000 students took part in internal university sports activities across 75-80 Egyptian universities during the 2025/2026 fiscal year. More than 10,000 students competed in the 52nd and 53rd University Tournaments. These figures come from records kept by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, which tracks activity at institutions including the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and Cairo University.
Honors and Results at Individual Universities
Cairo University honored 23 student-athletes for achievements in rowing, basketball, karate and speedball. The university announced full scholarships for students who represent Egypt in international competition. At the 52nd University Championship in 2025, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport finished first overall. Its finswimming team collected 27 medals consisting of 15 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze, while its Marine Academy team defeated Cairo University 71-60 in the basketball final.
Egypt also won two gold medals in women’s volleyball and basketball at the 10th World University Championship in Spain. The country will stage the 2026 FISU World University Finswimming Championship in Sharm El-Sheikh.
