Cairo Prepares for African University Championship as Sports Enrollment Hits Record Highs
Following a year of unprecedented growth, the city readies for a continental showcase while local universities celebrate a surge in international accolades.
How we reported this

Cairo is set to become the epicenter of continental collegiate athletics this September as it prepares to host the 2026 African University Championship. The selection of the capital as host follows a banner fiscal year for Egyptian higher education athletics, marked by participation growth that has reshaped the landscape of university sports across the country. According to records from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the 2025-2026 period saw more than 10,000 students competing across 75 to 80 universities, fueling a push for international recognition.
A New Standard of Excellence
The upcoming tournament arrives on the heels of a dominant performance by Egyptian student-athletes on the global stage. At the 10th World University Championship held in Spain, squads secured gold medals in both women’s volleyball and basketball, while others returned home with medals in swimming. These achievements have prompted a wave of institutional support at home. Cairo University recently formalised its commitment to this momentum by honoring 23 student-athletes for their successes in sports ranging from rowing and basketball to karate. To sustain this trajectory, the university has introduced full scholarships specifically for students representing Egypt in international competitions.
Building on 2025 Rivalries
The competitive nature of local university circuits remains as intense as ever, providing a foundation for the talent set to appear in September. The 52nd University Championship in 2025 underscored the depth of local talent, culminating in a marquee final where the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport edged out Cairo University 71-60. That victory cemented the Academy’s position as the overall champion of the 2025 tournament and the Martyr Al-Rifai tournament standings. With the city now turning its attention toward the African University Championship, athletic departments are shifting their focus from local league rivalries to organizing the logistics required for hosting an influx of continental competitors.
As the countdown to September begins, the focus for university athletic directors will shift to facility readiness and the continued implementation of scholarship programs aimed at retaining top-tier talent. While the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research continues to oversee this expansion, the success of the 2025-2026 season acts as the primary benchmark for the city’s readiness to accommodate the logistical demands of the upcoming African tournament.
