Cairo Opens 2 Major Sports Facilities, Expands Academy Access

Cairo's sporting landscape is undergoing its most significant transformation in decades, driven not by megaprojects alone but by a wave of grassroots-focused facilities that aim to put world-class amenities within reach of everyday Egyptians. The Ministry of Youth and Sports has finalized contracts for an 11,596 sqm commercial mall and multi-level parking inside Cairo International Stadium, projecting cumulative revenues exceeding EGP 25 billion and annual returns around EGP 300 million, funds that officials say will be reinvested into community sport programs.

From Stadiums to Social Clubs: A Broadening Base

The Ministry’s commercial development at Cairo International Stadium is part of a larger push to make major venues financially self-sustaining while freeing up resources for local clubs. Al-Ahly Football Club broke ground in February 2025 on a new 42,000-seat stadium in Sheikh Zayed City, northwest of Cairo, with an estimated cost of EGP 9 billion and completion expected in December 2028. The club has stated that the stadium will serve not only its first team but also host youth and community matches, bolstering grassroots football in the western suburbs.

In New Cairo, the Platinum Club, a 28-acre sports facility built with a 350 million EGP investment, was inaugurated as Egypt’s first Real Madrid Foundation Technical Academy, bringing the Spanish club’s coaching methodology to local children. The facility includes multiple football pitches, a swimming pool, and other amenities designed to nurture talent from a young age.

Further east, ZED Sports Club ZED East has opened two new 1,600 sqm multipurpose courts and launched a basketball academy, adding to its existing five football fields. The expansion reflects growing demand for organised sport among Cairo’s expanding population of young families.

Social Clubs for the Next Generation

Perhaps the most telling sign of the shift toward community sport is MIDAR for Investment’s agreement to build the first social sports club in Mostakbal City (New Cairo), with an investment exceeding EGP 3 billion. The first phase is scheduled to operate in the first half of 2027. The club, covering an area of 42 feddans, is designed to be affordable and accessible, offering football, basketball, tennis, and swimming facilities to residents who previously had limited options beyond private, high-cost clubs.

The cumulative effect of these projects, from the Ministry’s revenue-generating mall at the iconic Cairo International Stadium to the Real Madrid academy in Platinum Club, points to a strategy of using commercial returns to fund community access. With the social club in Mostakbal City set to open within two years, Cairo’s sport infrastructure is increasingly being built for and by the communities it serves.

For residents, the message is clear: the next generation of Egyptian athletes won’t just be produced in elite academies. They will come from neighbourhoods across the capital, nurtured in facilities built with long-term vision and grounded in everyday use.
