Cairo Invests Billions in Transit and Roads to Transform Daily Commutes

Cairo Governorate is allocated EGP 100.5 billion in public investments for the 2024/2025 plan covering 1,284 development projects that represent 21% of distributed public investments.

Transit Links Under Construction

Cairo Metro Line 4 from 6th of October to New Cairo remains under construction following a financing agreement for the fourth tranche of phase one signed between Egypt and Japan in September. The third and fourth phases of the Light Rail Transit project covering 35 km with 7 stations from Al-Salam to the New Administrative Capital are also under construction. The East Nile monorail spanning 56.5 km with 22 stations and the West Nile monorail spanning 42 km with 13 stations form part of the system awarded a USD 4.5 billion contract for design, build and operation. These routes connect established districts with newer areas and may reduce reliance on existing roads for daily movement.

Road Upgrades Across the Network

Upgrading work continues on 125 road projects covering 2,500 km in Egypt including the development of 106 km of the Greater Cairo Ring Road at a cost of LE8 billion. Residents who use the ring road for commuting between suburbs and central areas stand to see changes in road conditions from this segment of the work.

Community Reach of the Projects

The combination of metro, light rail, monorail and ring road work draws on the same overall investment plan. Local travel between points such as Al-Salam, New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital may become more direct once segments open. The scale of the allocation and the number of projects indicate sustained attention to transport capacity across the governorate.
