Cairo Retailers Boost Sales Using TikTok While Startups Climb Global Rankings
Retailers using short videos and platforms like MaxAB are expanding sales while the capital climbs global rankings for new ventures.
How we reported this

Egyptian small businesses in Cairo are increasingly leveraging TikTok for growth, with a 'TikTok for Entrepreneurs' event held in Cairo this week spotlighting how short-form videos drive revenue in sectors like fashion, food, and fragrance.
The timing aligns with the new Egyptian labour law that took effect on September 1, 2025 and explicitly protects freelancers and the SME digital business ecosystem. That statute backs Cairo's digital transformation strategy by giving legal cover to online sellers and gig workers who previously operated without clear rules.
Retail supply chain shifts to digital
MaxAB, a Cairo-based ecommerce startup founded in 2018, digitizes Egypt's small retail supply chain and has served over 150,000 traditional retailers while raising a total of $101.2 million in funding. Its platform connects corner shops with wholesalers, cutting out layers of middlemen that once raised costs for owners in dense neighborhoods across the capital.
Cairo ranks as the 1st most popular location in Egypt and the 10th globally to start a company or startup, with over 100 top companies and startups tracked in June 2026. This standing draws founders who see the city as a test bed for tools that serve both street-level vendors and online sellers.
Global spotlight on local models
The International Council for Small Business will host its 2025 World Congress in Cairo from November 24-28, 2025, featuring tours of sustainable enterprises and innovation hubs like SEKEM Guest House and The Greek Campus. Those visits let visiting delegates examine operating models that combine digital sales with physical supply chains already active in the city.
Owners who adopted short-form video earlier now report steadier orders in fashion, food, and fragrance lines. The same group benefits from the labour law's freelancer safeguards, which reduce the risk of sudden enforcement actions that once disrupted cash flow. As the ecosystem matures, the practical step for new entrants is to test one platform at a time while documenting sales data that the updated rules now recognize.
