Cairo Retail Expansion Reshaping Local Job and Talent Market

Around 89,000 square meters of retail space was delivered in Cairo in Q1 2026, bringing the total stock to over 3.3 million square meters. Approximately 331,300 square meters of retail space is expected to enter the Cairo market throughout the remainder of 2026.

Eastern Cairo Focus Supports New Roles

Eastern Greater Cairo, particularly New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital, is the focal point for retail expansion, with new business parks and community malls emerging. Openings such as Bascota's third Cairo location in Sheikh Zayed's Ivory Business Park and Krispy Kreme's first shop in New Cairo's Arabella Plaza illustrate the pattern. Additional sites include Happy Joe's Pizza & Ice Cream locations in Roxy in Heliopolis and Drop's 1,100-sqm flagship in New Cairo's One-Ninety. These developments coincide with IWG's expansion of 15 new flexible workspace locations across Cairo and suburbs.

The pattern of new venues is prompting retailers to seek staff for operations, customer service and venue management. Local businesses turning TikTok fame into revenue in fashion, fragrance and food are also contributing to entry-level and creative positions in the eastern corridors.

Experiential Offerings Drive Skill Shifts

Cairo retail landlords are re-evaluating pricing strategies and expecting rental increases in response to the March 2026 minor currency adjustment, though rates have largely remained stable across segments recently. A major trend in Cairo's retail sector is a shift toward experiential offerings, with shopping centers transforming into multi-purpose venues hosting concerts and sports events to drive foot traffic. This change is creating demand for talent in event coordination, hospitality and technical support roles that extend beyond traditional retail positions.

Small enterprises such as The Doodle Factory and Bellies En-Route are expanding activities that blend retail with community experiences, adding to the need for versatile workers. Egypt's new labour law effective September 1, 2025, includes provisions protecting freelancers and the SME digital business ecosystem, aligning with these evolving requirements.

Landlords and operators will continue adjusting recruitment approaches as additional space comes online and experiential formats gain ground, with hiring focused on adaptable talent suited to mixed-use environments.
